CHAPTER 7 - FIRE
Melinne Martin
After school, Melinne was feeling deeply sad, and she wasn't able to sleep. "Why did Professor Redson react that way? Maybe it was something I said. His eyes were full of pain. I feel so bad for him. He had been so kind to me since I met him. What had caused his change of attitude?" She was asking herself questions out loud that she didn't have answers to. She couldn't change what happened, but she knew there was something she could do about it, and that was to pray for him, so she did. "Father God, I pray for Professor Redson. I don't know him very well, but you do. My heart feels unsettled about him. There is something in his life that is not right and is making him sad. Give him peace; let his soul rest in You, God. I'll leave him in your hands, knowing that you want the best for him. Let your will be done in his life. In Jesus Name I pray, amen."
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday were her days off. On Friday morning, Melinne woke up at 7:00 a.m. frightened by a sudden blast. She heard people screaming outside in the street in front of her house. She got up in a hurry, looked through the window, and saw a billow of smoke emanating from a nearby residence.
Her medical training automatically kicked in, and she dressed in a flash. She took her medical supplies bag to go out and help whoever needed help. She stopped at her bedroom door and prayed. "God, please help every person that was inside that house, and let them be perfectly fine. In Jesus Name I pray, amen." Her bedroom was on the second floor of her house. She started to run, and she flew down the stairs. She wanted to get to them on time. When she approached the house, she saw people lying on the floor. She prayed silently. "God, let me be your instrument to help this family. God, help me! I can't do this alone."
The first person she saw was a woman lying on the street. Melinne approached her and evaluated her. The lady was a little dizzy; she was wheezing and nauseating. Her eyes were irritated because she inhaled some smoke, but other than that she was stable. Her husband came running to her. He was screaming and sobbing, and seeing that she was helping her, he asked with anguish.
"How is my wife? Please tell me she is alright."
"She is doing well; she is a little bit dizzy but fine." He started to cry more, but this time, tears of happiness that she was alive and stable. "Don't move her. Let her lie down here until the ambulance, the police, and the firetrucks get here. Who else was in the house?" she asked.
"My sons and daughters," he pointed at them. Several of his children were seated, while others were lying down in the street. They were wrapped with thin blankets around them that some of their neighbors brought to protect them. Melinne stepped by their sides and examined each one of them. They were all fine, thanks to God. At that moment, she heard the ambulance and the fire truck sirens getting closer to the neighborhood. She talked to the EMT's, the police officers, and the firefighters and updated them on the condition of each member of the family.
Fireman Luke Chardonai approached her. Luke was gorgeous. He was tall with black hair, brown eyes, and tan skin. "How are you doing, beautiful lady?" Luke asked with a charming smile.
"I am doing fine. You look remarkably familiar. Do I know you?" Melinne asked him.
"I cannot believe you don't remember me. You should be ashamed of yourself. Do you remember your neighbor Loki? That is me."
"Wow! I cannot believe it is you, Loki." She gave him a big hug, and he embraced her back. They shared phone numbers, and Melinne said she was going to call him.
With a playful grin he said to her. "Don't forget to call me, beautiful Mel. I have to go now but one day we need to catch up." The EMT's, the police officers, and firefighters said thanks to her for the help she provided, and she went back home.
She breathed deeply and thought. "Thank You, God, for watching over the lives of my neighbors."
By the time she got back to her house, it was 8:30 a.m. She prepared breakfast. She made scrambled eggs, ham, toast, and coffee. After she ate, she cleaned the dishes and the entire kitchen, did her exercises, took a shower, and got dressed. She wore jeans and a green flowery shirt, black sandals, black earrings, a black necklace, and a black purse. Her outfit looked cute. "I think I am obsessed about matching my clothes, no! That is not true. Yes, yes, I know it is." She giggled and left her home.
She turned on her white Camaro and went to town to buy a few things she needed. The landscape to go into town was beautiful. Sunset Beach town was gorgeous. She was thankful to God she was born there and lived most of her life in that beautiful place. Waves bounced rhythmically, crashing onto the shore as in making beautiful music. There were a large number of pretty and colorful birds flying all over the sea waters and the dry shoreline. A gentle breeze whispered through the coconut palms. Beautiful blue, gray, and green colors reflecting off the sea. The view was amazing, and it spoke of how great God is. How perfectly He made everything for us to enjoy it. She did not have words to express the love and gratitude she had for God. It was a beautiful painting for her to enjoy.
